What Type of Staffing Solution is Right for You? Here’s How to Decide

August 4th, 2017

Interested in working with a local staffing agency in Columbia, SC? If it’s your first time, you might not be aware of the full spectrum of solutions offered. And when you hear terms like “temp-to-hire” and “payroll administration,” it can confuse things further.

To help you learn about all a staffing provider can do for you, here’s a look at a few different types of staffing services and how each one works.

Temporary staffing.

When most people think about staffing, this service is what comes to mind first. It involves bringing on board a worker on a short-term, temporary basis; often to cover sick or maternity leave, or to offer extra manpower during a busy period.

The worker is typically employed through a staffing agency, which handles all the scheduling and payroll administration. They can be assigned for a day, a week, a month or longer. It simply depends on your needs.

Temp-to-hire staffing.

Also called “temp-to-perm staffing,” this arrangement essentially lets a company try out a potential employee on the job, for a set time, before extending a full-time offer. It gives employers an opportunity to see possible new hires in action and evaluate their skills and abilities, while also minimizing the risk of making a hiring mistake.

Permanent staffing.

This type of staffing service is sometimes called “direct hire staffing” and simply involves recruiting for full-time positions. An employer would use a staffing agency to find and recruit candidates, screen and interview them, and conduct background and reference checks. The hiring company would then interview and hire their top-pick candidate directly.

When it comes to this type of staffing, there are typically two approaches: contingency and retained. These refer to how the staffing agency gets paid.

  • With a contingency search, a staffing agency doesn’t get paid until they successfully recruit for an opening.
  • Retained searches, on the other hand, are more common when it comes to executive-level positions. With this type of search, you’re retaining a recruiter upfront for your hiring needs.

Payroll administration.

This type of staffing service is when an agency places your employees on their payroll. The agency then takes over the administration of payroll. This helps to lower operational costs, risks and liabilities associated with payroll. However, your company still bears legally responsibility when it comes to employment law.
