What Should You Wear to a Job Interview at a Staffing Agency?

October 20th, 2017

You just landed your first interview with a staffing agency. Congratulations! Now comes the all-important question:

What should you wear?

In today’s day and age, it can be confusing with companies that have dress codes ranging from business suits to blue jeans.

But, when it comes to interviewing with a staffing agency in Greenville, SC, wear what’s appropriate at any professional job interview. Remember, a recruiter with an agency is not only evaluating your fit as a candidate for their particular agency, but also for the client companies they work with. That’s why it’s so important to always look your best.

Your first step in the process? Making sure you have proper interview attire. Don’t wait until the night before to figure out what you’re going to wear. That business suit or shirt you haven’t worn in a year might not still fit you. Then what will you do?

Instead, a few days in advance, make sure you have an outfit picked out, complete with shoes and a belt. Try it on to ensure it fits properly. If it needs to be dry cleaned, make sure you’re able to get the clothes back the day before the interview. If your shoes need polishing, don’t wait until the morning of the interview.

To help you even further, here are a few gender-specific tips:

Interview attire for men.

For men, make sure you have a suit that fits well and is properly pressed. It should be in muted tones and solid colors, such as black, navy or dark gray. You should also wear a long-sleeved shirt under the suit with a tie and belt, along with dark socks and dress shoes.

Interview attire for women.

For women, it gets a little more complicated because there are more options to choose from. You can wear a dress or a skirt, just make sure you also wear tights or panty hose. You can also wear a suit that’s in a neutral solid color, along with a coordinating blouse and shoes.

Additional tips on attire.

  • Wear something that makes you feel both comfortable and confident. You don’t want your clothes to detract from your ability to perform well in an interview.
  • Don’t wear a lot of jewelry, or heavy cologne or perfume.
  • Hair and nails should be neat and professional looking.
  • If you have piercings or tattoos, try to minimize them as much as possible.
  • Don’t bring gum, coffee or soda with you into an interview; also, make sure your phone is on vibrate or turned off.

Whatever you do wear, just remember to dress like you would for any interview. You want to make a lasting impression on the recruiter, which is why it’s so important to dress to impress.
