How to Turn Your Phone Interview into a Job Interview

You just scheduled your first phone interview for a job you really want. Congratulations!

But before you celebrate, there’s work to be done: namely, strategizing how you’re going to turn that phone interview into a face-to-face second interview.

Here are some tips for helping you get there:

Tip #1: Treat it like an in-person interview.

That’s why it’s so important to prepare just as much as you would for an in-person interview. Research the company, practice common interview answers, and develop your own list of questions to ask. Even if you don’t use all the information you learned, it’s better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Also, review your resume and read through the job description just before the interview so details are fresh in your mind. You can even keep copies by your side during the interview in case you need to reference them.

Tip #2: Get dressed.

This might sound ridiculous. After all, the interviewer can’t see you. But if you’re still in your pajamas during the interview, it can actually impact your performance. However, when you’re showered and dressed, you’ll feel more polished and confident. This can translate in the quality of your answers and the impression you make on the interviewer.

Tip #3: Cut out distractions.

During your phone interview, it’s vital that you focus. That means:

  • Don’t leave the TV on mute. Something on it will catch your attention and distract you from what the interviewer is saying.
  • Do find a quiet place in your home, sit at a table or desk, keep a note pad and pencil by your side so you can jot down thoughts and questions during the interview, and focus 100% on the interview.
  • Also, do make sure your interview is scheduled during a time when the kids aren’t home and pets are put away.

Tip #4: Listen carefully and ask questions.

Demonstrate your listening skills during the interview. Don’t try to dominate the conversation or interrupt the interviewer. Let the interviewer be your guide throughout the process. Answer the questions being asked, but also remember that an interview is a conversation. Be sure to ask your own questions so you can assess whether the opportunity is the right one for you.

Tip #5: Slow down and smile.

Interviews are nerve-wracking in general. But during a phone interview, it can be easy to speak too quickly so the interviewer has a hard time understanding you. That’s why you need to take a breath and slow down. Don’t cut in while an interviewer is asking you a question. Pause for a beat before answering it. This will give you a moment to organize your thoughts and will help your answer sound more measured.

Another quick tip? Smile during the interview. The interviewer won’t see it, but they’ll be able to hear it in your answers.

Tip #6: Send a thank you note or email.

Shortly after the phone interview, send a note or email thanking the interviewer for their time and re-iterating your interest in the position.
