6 Job Interview Questions to Ask a Potential Supervisor

November 10th, 2017

As one of Columbia’s trusted staffing firms, TRUE Group knows there’s a lot on the line when you’re hiring an employee. But the stakes get even higher when you’re hiring someone for a management position.

You’re not only depending on this person to get work done, but also to manage and oversee the work of others. It’s a tall order and takes the right skills and personality.

So, when hiring for this kind of position, what questions should you be asking? Here’s a look at six:

How many employees have you managed in the past?

Asking this question is important to ensure the person you ultimately hire has experience with the size team you need them to manage. If they’ve only managed three or four workers in the past, and the department you’re hiring for consists of 25 staff members, then it could be a tough adjustment.

How do you deal with difficult employees?

Every manager has seen their fair share of hard-to-manage employees. But it’s how they gain control over the situation that’s important. Listen closely for their answers on how they assessed the situation, what they did about it, the outcome and what they learned from it.

What’s your approach to managing employees?

This question helps you assess a candidate’s style when it comes to managing people. It also ensures it jives with your company’s culture and the organization at large.

What aspects of leadership do you like best? Least?

This question will help you dig deeper and better evaluate whether the candidate’s strengths are in line with what your company needs. Likewise, asking about what they like least can help you gain some insight into their weaknesses.

Have you ever had to fire someone? How did you go about doing it?

Firing an employee is never fun. But sometimes it’s necessary. You want to ensure the candidate you hire is capable of making difficult decisions, as well as following proper protocol and procedure when doing so.

How do you motivate your staff?

At the end of the day, it’s about performance and results. And you need a leader who is going to be able to rally the troops and motivate them to succeed. Ask each candidate for specifics on how they go about inspiring and leading their team to produce optimal results.

Gearing up for supervisor interviews? In addition to asking the questions above, make sure you don’t ask these illegal questions during your interview.
