Ask These Questions to Wow Your Interviewer

December 22nd, 2017

When you go to an interview, you expect to answer a lot of questions. That’s a given.

But did you know the questions you ask the hiring manager can also impact whether you get the offer? As one of Columbia’s top employment agencies, True Group knows if you arrive without smart questions – or don’t ask any questions at all – you could end up in second place.

To ensure that doesn’t happen – and to impress the hiring manager at your next big interview – make sure you ask these key questions:

What do employees like most about working at this company?

This question shows the hiring manager you understand the importance of cultural fit and you want to evaluate the working environment to ensure it’s right for you.

How do you measure success in this role?

The hiring manager likely explained the tasks and responsibilities that come with the job. But do you know how your performance will be measured? This is important not only so you fully understand the position and what’s required of you, but also to demonstrate you’re goal-oriented and interested in accountability.

What kinds of challenges come with this role?

This question helps you because you’ll get a more accurate sense of the good, bad and ugly of the job. At the same time, for the hiring manager, it shows that you understand not every position is perfect and that you’re ready, willing and able to meet any challenges that come your way.

What are your expectations in the first month in this role?

You want to hit the ground running if offered the job; asking this question demonstrates that to the hiring manager. In addition, it will give you a more realistic sense of whether the demands of the opportunity are a good fit for you.

How does this position fit into larger organizational goals?

Many workers arrive at the office, do their jobs and leave at the end of the day without a thought as to how their output fits into larger company goals. Employers, however, value workers who have a bigger picture mentality. In other words, those who understand the larger impact that seemingly small details of their jobs can have on the bottom line. With this question, you can demonstrate that you’re one of them.

What traits do your top performers share?

Asking this question shows the hiring manager you’re serious about success. On top of that, it enables you to better evaluate the opportunity and whether the company is the right fit for you.
