Why You Never Hear Back After Applying for a Job

January 19th, 2018

There’s nothing worse than applying for a job in Columbia you think you’re a great fit for…then hearing nothing back. Unfortunately, you’re not alone. Many candidates report the same experience. So why does it happen? For a few reasons. Here’s a look at them:

You’re not qualified.

If other candidates have stronger resumes and cover letters, better skills and more experience, then hiring managers will simply filter you out of the running.

What to do: When you’re applying for new Columbia jobs, make sure you’re truly qualified for them. Sure, there might be a few instances where your dream job gets advertised and you want to take a shot at it, even if you don’t meet all the qualifications. But in most cases, make sure you have the right skills and abilities. Otherwise, you’re wasting your own time, as well as the hiring manager’s.

You’re getting screened out.

In today’s world, it takes a while before a human lays eyes on your resume. Many are first fed through an applicant tracking system. So, if you don’t keep that in mind when creating your resume, it could impact your chances of getting called for an interview.

What to do: Read through the job posting and be on the lookout for keywords you can incorporate into your resume. This will increase your odds of making it through applicant tracking software.

Your resume is sloppy.

You could have extensive experience and all the right skills for a job, but if your resume is sloppy or unprofessional in any way, busy hiring managers aren’t going to give it a second look.

What to do: Take your time writing, editing and polishing your resume. Also, ask a family member or friend to review it before you start submitting it to potential employers.

You’re applying too late.

If a hiring manager receives 250 applications for a job, and yours is number 249, the chances of you getting an interview are slim.

What to do: Create a strong resume so once a job opens up, you can quickly customize and submit it, so you’re one of the first available candidates.

Hiring managers don’t have the time.

If a hiring manager posts a job and gets hundreds of resumes, they simply don’t have the time to respond to each one. Some will set up automated responses, where they can send out a form rejection email. However, many don’t, so don’t be surprised when you don’t hear anything.

What to do: Make sure your resume stands out and gets noticed by a hiring manager so you do hear back. Take your time customizing it for each position, make sure it doesn’t contain any errors, and focus on your track record of success and accomplishments in it.
