5 Essential Things to Do After Leaving a Job Interview

February 2nd, 2018

Congratulations! You got an interview for a job you really want. You know you have to do your homework and carefully prepare if you want to make the best impression possible. But as top Columbia recruiters, we know your work doesn’t end there. There are also steps you should take directly after the interview? To help you, here’s a look at five of them:

#1: Send a thank you note.

After your interview, you should send along a thank you note or email to all those who interviewed you. Try to personalize each one in case interviewers compare them. So what should you say? Keep it short. You can simply thank them for the opportunity to interview, reiterate your interest in the job and why you think you’re a good fit, and let them know you’re looking forward to their decision.

#2: Keep up your job search.

In the meantime, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak, and sit around, waiting to hear back. Keep up your existing job search. Even if you think you got the job, you never know what can happen internally at a company. It’s best, instead, to continue applying and interviewing until you have a firm offer in hand.

#3: Stay busy.

As Columbia recruiters, we understand that if you really want a particular job, the waiting game can be killer. That’s why it’s important to stay busy during it. Don’t make yourself crazy constantly checking your email or phone for any news about the job. Instead, keep active with your job search, with work, with your family and friends, and with hobbies and activities you enjoy.

#4: Follow up.

If the interviewer told you they’d have a decision in a week and it’s now been two, it’s completely appropriate to follow up. It’s up to you whether to call or email. When you do, simply let them know you’re inquiring about the status of the position and when you can expect a decision.

#5: Be professional.

No matter what, be professional throughout it. If you never hear back and are left in the dark, don’t get angry and blast off an irate email to the interviewer. Instead, acknowledge the fact that you’re disappointed, ask yourself whether you could have done a better job in the interview or hiring process, and then move on.
